United Airlines sits out Typhoon in Cairns

United Airlines flight 99 from Cairns to Guam last night was cancelled due to Typhoon Vongfong bearing down on the Mariana Islands. N13227 B738 was photographed today at Cairns below. A delayed service from Cairns to Guam is expected to depart later tonight.

FNQ Yestayear Images - September 1993

On the 8th the locally based joyride 'Tiger Moth' VH-BXF was unfortunatly blown over on its nose as it passed the GA run up bay by the wash from a Banderiante which was in situ.

RAF C-130K's are rare visitors to Australia, so this example XV195 was welcome on the 25th.

Arriving on delivery via Majuro on the 3rd was Nationair Dash 8A P2-NAZ. This aircraft went into service later on the Port Moresby- Cairns run as well as Tabubil-Cairns. It is still in operation today with Cobham operating the Tabubil-Cairns run for OK Tedi mining along with two other Dash 8A's.

Yet another ex PNGDF C-47, P2-004, arr on the 24th for attention prior to heading south.

Cessna 421 P2-CBS was noted on the 27th in the GA area awaiting a new powerplant.

The last of the Talair ferries ended with Cessna A185 VH-GKE (originally P2-GKE) arriving from PNG on the 27th after completion of restoration at Goroka. The Cessna A185 played a pivotal role in the company's early days and soldiered on till the early eighties. The aircraft features the very colourful retro livery of Territory Airlines which was the original name of Talair prior to Independance. It was subsequently based in Brisbane for several years before being sold in New Zealand.

A one time only missed approach for RW 33 was conducted by a low viz RAAF P-3 Orion (serial unknown) on the 25th.

Danish Air Transport ATR 42-500 arrived in Cairns this morning wearing the Danish registration OY-RUJ. This aircraft will join the Hevilift ATR 42 fleet.
