Cairns Airport APEC 2018 aircraft movements

APEC (Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation) 2018 was held in Port Moresby, PNG between the 15th and 18th of November. It was the first time PNG hosted APEC, Australia assisted significantly with logistics and security for the conference. With Port Moresby airport having limited tarmac space availability for visiting layover aircraft Australia assisted with much of the overflow aircraft parking. This included the cities of Cairns, Darwin, and Brisbane airports.

Townsville held an important role with the RAAF F/A-18 hornets which operated security operations during the week leading up and during the APEC event. An RNZAF P-3 Orion NZ4206 also supported operations during the event from Townsville.

Darwin was host to the Japanese Airforce Boeing 747-400’s 20-1101 and 20-1102 and Brisbane hosted both the Thai Airforce Airbus 340-500 HS-TYV and Korean Airforce Boeing 747-400 10001 aircraft.

Cairns Airport is the closest Australian city to Port Moresby hosted the majority of the foreign Government aircraft as well as the RAAF KC30 (Airbus A330-200) tanker support aircraft for the F/A-18’s.
