The two week exercise will commence on Monday 23 September and will graduate selected Australian Defence Force (ADF) personnel known as Joint Terminal Attack Controllers (JTACs). The student JTACs will be trained in the planning, briefing, controlling and reporting of Close Air Support on the battlefield, in support of the ADF’s continuing operational requirements.
Exercise Black Dagger is an air-to-ground live fire exercise that is conducted twice a year from RAAF Base Townsville where different fast jets are used to support the final phase of the JTAC course and subsequently produce combat-ready JTACs for ADF operational requirements.
The F/A-18A Hornets will be operating in the Townsville Field Training Area, which offers adequate space, ranges and targets for crews to simulate full-scale ground attacks.
Exercise Black Dagger will include weekend and night flying with all jets landed by 10.30pm and is set to conclude on 11 October 13.
